Hi tonyblue2 and welcome.
Something is not right with your dates for the Manchester's in Malaya.  The 2nd Bn amalgamated with the 1st Bn in 1948 and the 1st Bn went to Germany then, I was there with my father first in  Wuppertal and later in Berlin.  The Bn went to Malaya in 1951.  Get hold of a copy of Capt Bonner's book Jungle Bashers it is the true story of the battalion's time in Malaya 1951 to 1954. Also have a look in the Photos and Postcards by Battalion section of the forum there are photos from both Germany and Malaya there.
Do you have any more information on your fathers time in the Army?

I forgot to say that if you are anywhere near Ashton Under Lyne call into the Manchest Regiment Museum  Capt Bonners book should be available from there.  The web site for the museum is:  http://www.tameside.gov.uk/museumsgalleries/mom  There is a lot of information on the Regiment in the Museum Archive which is in a separate building, the staff are very helpfull.
I would also suggest that you get hold of your fathers Service Records, your mother can get them free.  Information on how to go about getting them is on this site: http://www.veterans-uk.info/
If your mother has his medals dependant on which medals they are his service number may be on the rim.
Let us know when you have more information and someone on the Forum may be able to help more.
