HI ANNIE,
hope this aint too late! got very strong family ties to gorton monestary and my auntie knew f.jackson very well.
he survived the war, returned to gorton, was very reluctant to speak of his time in the war. he was a very nice man by all accounts. my aunties doing some ringing round for you, there was an article in cheshire life complete with pic about him which i may be able to get for you. he left gorton in 1963 went to glasgow then london where he died but got no date yet

p.s. got some stuff about my uncle arthur barber who died as a pow 28/5/43

Very good question Annie.
I suspect he may be away for a long weekend!!!!!!
I sent him a PM regards his uncle (POW) no reply so far.
I believe that in the POW Record Cards that Roy provided me with I have Arthur Barber's but need some help from "Tobo" to confirm it is him.

Roy, he is not in the Manchester's folder but is in the folder with the "B's".  His card does not identify him as being 1st Bn Manchester's, it shows "C. Grp.  SA. with the number 637.  It took me some time to realise that 637 is his last three.  His place of origin is a Gorton address and the destination of the report is another Gorton address so I have high hopes that I have the right one.

Hi Tony !

Thank you for the stuff on Samuel ... I didn't have him ! .... I'm sure theres a few I've missed out and a few I've added ... but the only picture of the WW1 memorial for the Monastery was on a movie of the last Mass held there ... and I could hardly see it !!  :-\ so I've taken a leap of faith and tried to add the soldiers who were either born or lived in Gorton !

I'd be thrilled to add any that you know !!

By the way ... do you think your Aunty would happen to know of Father Athanasius Johnston ? .... he was my first priest that I found .... and I know I shouldn't have favourites .... but ........  ::) ::) .... I would love anything at all on him !!

Thanks for your help !

Annie

Look forward to seeing what you have on your uncle.
