Grandfather - BOER WAR AND 1ST WORLD WAR
« on: November 10, 2008, 03:43:00 PM »
Hi I am new to this wonderful forum.  I am working on my family tree and would be interested in how I find out about my grand dad who fought in both wars.  Apparently he lied about his age to fight in the Boer War not sure what regiment.  I do know in first world war he was in the RAMC.  I have recently come across an old photo of him in his uniform.  Also he was gassed and my grand mother received a telegram saying he had died!  But he walked into their house months later!  If anyone can help me I would be so grateful His name was Matthew Dockerty (his spelling of his surname could also be Doherty.  He was born in 1881 in Atherton.

Thank you

Hi,

I just asked my mum & Dads (they were both brought up in Moston) and they remembers the Colliery as being down by Moston station - what is now Oldham Rd / Broadway junction, If you are familiar with the area you would go down broadway, past the Carpet shop on Broadway to the next main junction (what used to be the Co-op building we think) and at the colliery would have been situated on the right of the road there, if you turn right into Oldham road the road has a funny little bend on it which dad says he thinks used to be the entry to the Pit & associated railway sidings - (My dads a railway expert by the way if anyone needs any railway info!)
it appears some of my parents families worked the railways there

I just googled the colliery too & theres loads of info - this link for A2A came up too, looks like it might be interesting - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/subjectView.asp?ID=B10135&tabType=ARCHIVE
