!6th Manchester Regiment

Hello - I am looking for my mothers Great Uncle who was called Horace S(Stanley) Guildford, from his war medals I know he was in the 16th, but my Mum has no memory of him so I am wondering if he didn't survive the war, can anyone tell me how I can find out this information, before I troll through BMD. I live in Devon so not so easy to visit places in Manchester (but I am a Manchester lass)

ah yes indeed it was!

Horace was originally in 16th Battalion, D company platoon 14, he was a Lance Corporal

he is on this photo, but i'm not sure which one he is http://themanchesters.org/forum/index.php?topic=4676.0

he's probably on the second row from the front and he's one of three men with one stripe on their sleeves (i can only spot two possibles)

Thank you Harribobs- even though I don't know which one he really is it's great to see a photo.  My Mum has no memory of him she says no one talked about him so now I need to find out where he went to after the war.

when the 16th battalion was first raised,they were issued with a different set of numbers,horaces original number,was 776,they were later changed to 4 digit numbers.

he was described by his commanding officer,as a sober+reliable soldier
height 5ft 10inch
weight 141Ibs
brown eyes
brown hair
brown complexion.

if he had been wearing shorts in the photo,i would have been able to positively identify him,cos he had a scar on his left knee.

given the above description,i would say he is the soldier on the second row from the front,1st right

I think I have seen this photo somewhere before I need to look at my dads things. I think my grandad is on the second row from the front, third from the right. Unfortunately I dont have much information on him or any photos of him at that age. I will try and do some more research to fully confirm this is him.

Hello Paul, what a surprise. My great grandmother May Hannah was I think Horace Stanleys sister, she married a Sydney Crompton & my gran is Alice Crompton, there daughter

I started researching some of my not so direct ancestors a while ago as my aim is to understand my family history more & maybe find family.

Mum remembers Auntie Cissy was Lily & never marries, she tells me she thinks Auntie Alice went to Canada or Australia, Aunty Mat (Martha) mum was evacuated with them during WWII.  I think she remembers Gretrude & John too but no memory of your grandfather.

Mum is now 83 & we both live in Exmouth in Devon - look ofrward to hearing more from you

edgar married ada,jane whiteley on 23-4-1898
john married lizzie crewdson 22-5-1920
lily didnt marry
gertrude married harold,fuller barnes 10-6-1912
martha married frederick pendlebury 26-12-1904
alice married william,elliott dawson 23-6-1906
all at st.catherines

horace went to live in northwich and married genevieve barnes in 1921,he became a beer retailer,and in the 1930s lived at 43 castle st,northwich
died in ormskirk in 1972
horace served with the 1st volunteer battalion manchester regt,this battalion was later to become the 5th manchesters,his older brother john served at gallipoli and in france/flanders with the 5th manchesters as private 2079 john guilford,he was later renumbered as 200411.
horace was baptised at st.catherines on 7th february 1890

Yes that's my Grandma's Aunts & Uncles - brilliant, my Mum was evacuated to stay with Auntie Mat (Martha) & Uncle Fred during the War. My Great Grandmother is Mary Hannah Guildford who married Sydney Lyons Crompton
