How can i find if my GT Grandfather was in the boer war?

Hi there, first time on the forum.

trying to find out if my gt grandfather served in the boer war, my aunty(his grandaughter) is convinced he was in the boer war and ww1.he was born in 1878. i have his birth and marriage cert from 1902 which states he was in the 2nd cheshire regiment as a private and resident at the castle chester. The thing i don't have is a service number which is why i have never been able to find out if he also served in ww1.
I do have a photo of him in uniform but it's not very clear and no idea when it was taken.

any help or advice would be much appreciated
