Hi, I don't know if anyone can help me with my search for my grandfathers military history. I have found a record on Ancestry of a John Devonshire but don't know how to find out if this is my relation, any ideas?

gdmotorcycles

Hi again, is there any way of finding out where 3512654 John Devonshire came from?

harribobs

Hi Gd

sorry no one came back to you on this query, the service number 3512654 is a post 1922 number so John would have been a regular soldier and his records will more than likey be available from the Veterans Agency in Glasgow

however if you have found the records on Ancestry, is there not an address you can match it up to?

cheers

I think he means he has found the MIC on Ancestry, I can't see anything in the service or pension records.

Thanks for your help chaps, I know very little about my Grandfather other than that he was born Heywood Lancs 1876, married in Colchester 1904, was in Heywood again in 1908 when my father was born and was in the Army as, I believe, a regular. I don't know when he joined up, when he left or where or with whom he served. He's listed in the 1881 & 1891 census but not in 1901, I have a picture of him in uniform dated approx 1921 so i guess he survived the war.

Needles and haystacks I think.

Thanks again for your time and efforts, it's greatly appreciated.

Hi Not sure if you have the 1881 Census. He is listed as Lodgers Son His Father from Tipperary. Father Thomas, mother Katherine and sister Mary Ellen 2 months old.
Not sure if it will upload.

not necessarily  ;)  i think you're got a very prospect there, i would like to see that photo to see if we could identify his rank but i suspect your next step will be to apply for his records

Hi, thanks again for your efforts.

Irish eh?

I'll apply for his service records but I don't know if the John Devonshire who was in the Manchester regiment is my ancestor or not.

He had a younger brother Patrick who I've just found as being married in 1919 so he would have probably served somewhere in the Great War.

Thanks again for your time, I have to be honest and say that until last week, I'd never heard of the Manchester regiment but having read some of its history, I can see why you are all so proud of it.

he was renumbered in 1917,as 200223

some of the men in this battalion, would have come from the heywood area.
