Help getting 20559 PTE EVANS medals in a safe home
« on: November 18, 2008, 05:40:34 PM »
Hi I wonder if anyone can help me out.  I am originally from Manchester (Urmston) and have been serving in the Armed forces for 19 years.  I have recently been left some medals in a will from an old neighbour, that I barley remember as a child .  I think he left them me due to him having no family and knowing with my military back ground I would take good care of them.  The medals are the WW1 Trio.  Im trying to find out a little more about the brave soldier, who was awarded the medals.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  My final aim is to get the medals displayed in a safe and appropriate place

Details on all 3 medals
20559 PTE . E . EVANS. MANCH.R.

Regards

Ian

Hi Ian

and welcome to the group

You have the medals of an original 'pal'

Edward Evans Private 20559, 22nd Battalion C coy plat 9

he went off to France on the 12th Nov 1915 and seems to have survived the war

this is a photo of his platoon, but i don't know which one is him

and a copy of his medal index card

Ian.

I suggest that the most suitable place for the medals to be held is in the Museum of The Manchester Regiment. A special medal room is devoted to the medals awarded to soldiers who served in either the Manchester Regiment or its two predecessor regiments - the 63rd and 96th Regiments of Foot.  Donated medals become the property of the Trustees of the Manchester Regiment Collection and are in the safe keeping of Tameside Council.

They are kept with high security and cctv coverage. Details are shown on the museum website and perhaps you should have a word first of all with the excellent curator -Garry Smith on 0161 342 2254.

Hi Ian and a Warm Welcome to our Forum  ;D

It would appear your old neighbours trust was well founded! Is it your understanding that Edward Evans could have been a relation to the gentleman who left them to you ?

Chris I can’t thank you enough for the information given, it has enabled me to make a connection with the medals and the brave soldier who risked everything to safeguard our freedom.

Wendi, thanks for your reply,  It is my understanding that Pte Edward Evans was related to my childhood neighbour.  I can give you more details if needed.

Robert thanks for that very useful information, I think the museum would be a most fitting tribute to entrust Pte Evans medals to.  I shall be giving them to the museum on my next visit to Manchester before Christmas and touching base with Garry Smith.

Just one final thing, with the medals was a 1939-1945 Defence medal.  There is no name on this medal, and I’m assuming this is down to the mass distribution of this medal.  Does the time frame fit could this also be one of Edwards’s medals?

Thanks again

Ian

If you wish to know more about Edward, it would be worth letting us know what you have.

In respect to the Defence Medal, it was awarded for Forces in non-operational areas, Civil defence, Home Guard etc, so would fit with the profile.
