Holyrood Church

Hello forum members,

My name is Andrew Connell and I am the webmaster and magazine editor for Holyrood Church at Swinton. (http://www.holyroodchurch.org.uk/welcome.htm) and I was wondering if the following information might be of use to your group.

Holyrood church is located on Moorside Road, Swinton, which is in the Salford district of Manchester. The church is the custodian of the Moorside Parish War Memorial. Of the fifty four names listed on the memorial from the First World War, records show twenty of those names served with the Manchester Regiment.
The purpose of this posting is three fold.

Firstly: - To bring to your attention the fact there are twenty soldiers of the Manchester Regiment named on the Moorside Memorial . The twenty names are listed below for your information and from our website you can link through to every serviceman's Commonwealth War Graves Commission record.

Secondly: - To try and ascertain if any of you have any information, pictures, service records etc. of any of the servicemen listed below and if you would be willing to share that information with so that it can be posted on our website? (Please refere to 'Additional Information' section below.

AND

Thirdly: -  To draw to your attention to the fact, and invite you to attend, a rededication service and ceremony of the memorial will take place at 10:15 am on Sunday 19th October 2008 at Holy Rood church.

The communion church service will be conducted by the Reverend Dudley Barnet, a previous vicar of Holyrood church. The rededication ceremony will be led by the Reverend H.W. Bearn, Chaplain to H.M. The Queen.
Also in attendance will be Lt. Col (Retd) M.J. Glover TD MA AMA in his capacity as the Regimental Secretary of the Lacashire Fusillers, the Mayor of Salford and two local councillors Messer's Compton and Macdonald.
We are currently awaiting a response from the Lord Lieutenant's office to see if he or a deputy will attend to lay the floral tribute. We have arranged for a bugler to play the Last Post and Reveille.

Below, in addition to the names listed on the memorial, I have also included some additional information about the memorial restoration project and research into the names listed.

If you do intend to come along on the 19th October, all I would ask is that you kindly let me know via email of your intention to attend. This will assist with planning, catering seating arrangements etc. Please send your email to holyroodchurch@msn.com

I do hope the information is of use to you. As I'm sure you will appreciate from your own research efforts, we think and trust we have recoded the information correctly. However, please do let me know if there are any glaring errors/omissions.

In the meantime I and my colleagues will do our best to ensure the names of those service personnel who paid the ultimate sacrfice are remembered for future generations.

Kind regards
Andrew Connell

Addtional Information

The following information is a conglomeration of different articles I have put written for our church magazine, website and local paper.

Earlier this year, to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the First World War, myself and a group of friends thought it would be a good idea to organise a renovation project to restore the memorial to its former glory.

The memorial has been granted 'Listed' status by the English Heritage War Memorial Trust. By granting listed status to the Memorial, not only did the EHWMT recognise the historic significance of the monument, they considered it important enough to provide a grant of £2,500 towards its restoration.

The full cost of renovation will be in the region of £7,500. Additional funding is being sought via a number of local community funding streams and we have launched an appeal in an effort to raise more money.

In addition to the names listed on the memorial itself, all are now recorded on the Holyrood Church website, thereby providing and serving as another 'virtual' memorial and contributing to the local history of our area.
In total there are sixty seven names inscribed on the memorial (54 from WW1 and 13 from WW2) and in parallel with the renovation appeal, and in an effort to build up some detail and history behind the names, we thought it would be a good idea to carry out some research on the names.

Of those fifty four names twenty were from the 'Manchester Regiment' and ten from the Lancashire Fusiliers.
Having successfully linked all the First world War names to their respective entries within the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, I have now started to try and find out more 'background' information about each service man in an effort to make them 'real' and see what part they played in our local history.

As I'm sure you can appreciate, this is a slow and painstaking task. However, since I started my research earlier this year I have already uncovered some interesting facts.

Of particular note are the names of the two Rylands brothers (Reginald Victor Manchester Regiment) both of whom were killed in the 1st World War. The brothers were from a particularly wealthy family who have many links with the Manchester area.

Both had been students at Manchester University and their father was Richard W. Rylands who, according his 1901 Census return was Solicitor of The Supreme Court. Following the death of his two sons Richard Rylands and his wife Mary commissioned two stained glass windows to be installed in Holyrood church commemorating the death of their sons.

David Dorning Phethean was the son of Charles Phethean (Manchester Regiment) another solider named on the memorial. David became an actor, director and writer and was Director of the Bristol Old Vic from approximately 1963 to 1978.

Herbert Shedlock served in the Manchester Regiment and was killed on the 11th January 1917. I'm currently in email correspondence with someone in Australia who is the great nephew of Herbert Shedlock.

I'm also in contact with the Colton (Staffordshire) Local History Society in relation to two sisters with the family name of Mottram who in 1901 were employed as servants by the Rylands family.

Dear Manchester Regiment Forum Members,

First and foremost thank you one and all who have posted messages and information on this forum in response to my original posting.

The information you have provided has been a great help in our research and has been posted on our website for the benefit of all to see. I have acknowledged the assistance of the Manchester Group Forum and where relevant linked back to your forum which I hope will assist you to grow.

Last Sunday 19th October saw the Moorside War Memorial service and rededication ceremony take place. The congregation was nearly one hundred and fifty strong with representatives from both the Manchester Regiment and Lancashire Fusiliers.  (Of the fifty four names on the memorial twenty were Manchester's and eleven were Fusiliers).

You can find out more information and view pictures of the service and ceremony by visiting our website at http://www.holyroodchurch.org.uk/moorsidewarmemorial.htm . Do please feel free to visit.

I must admit that on reading the information you made available I couldn't hep but feel a lump in my throat. Not only because the information provided made the names 'come alive' but also because it was heartening to know there are other like minded people out there who do still care for the memory of those service men who suffered such privations and hardship during the First World War many of whom paid with their lives.

I can only assume that like me you continue to pray to your own God for the safe return for as many of our service personnel who are currently serving their country.

In the words of Arnold Swarchenegger I've no doubt 'I'll be back' asking for your assistance as and when the need arises.

Thank you all once again for your help and assistance.

Kind regards

Andrew Connell

Hello Mack,

Andrew here from Holyrood Church Swinton.

Thank you for continuing to send the information through. I'm updating our website slowly but surely.

For future reference would you be kind enough to send any further information via our email address of holyroodchurch(at)tmsn.com Please replace (at) with @ please? Modified to prevent spam
That way I can respond to you directly. Thanks.

In response to the questions you pose in your messages...

177 Chorley Road Swinton is NOT in the parish of Holyrood Church.

The details I currently have for Samuel Wilson are...

Signaller SAMUEL WILSON (104925)
Samuel Wilson emigrated to Canada about 1912 to take up farming.  Previously he had worked in the warehouse of the mill of Burgess, Ledward and Co., Walkden.  During this time he had lived with his sister at Moorside and Swinton.  Signaller Wilson enlisted in the Saskatchewan Regt. of the Canadian Infantry in Sept.1915.  The 26 years old soldier had only been in France when he was shot in the head and killed instantly on 15th August 1917.  His widow, to whom he had only been married a year, lived at 146, Worsley Road, Farnworth.  Signaller Wilson's name is commemorated on Canada's National Memorial at Vimy.
CWWGC Certificate
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=1577481

and would you be kind enough to clarify the following details you provided about Thomas Hollinshead please? You say he enlisted 11.12.15, joined camp at Reading 15.12.15 then went to Codford Training Camp on 2.12.16. This would mean Thomas had been in the army for nearly a year before receiving any training.

Thank you once again for all your assistance

Kind regards

Andrew
