If anyone can give me any info at all on Private James William Barnett, 4th Manchester Regiment I would be very grateful. I know nothing about his time in the army. I have a number 29067 but it looks like the 7 has been changed to a 1.

I also have a book called 'Manchester City Battalions Book Of Honour' which gives details of 8 battalions formed in Manchester. The 90th Infantry Brigade (16th-19th Service Battalions) and 91st Infantry Brigade (20th-23rd Service Battalions). The Battalions are also known as the 1st to the 8th City Battalions. The book lists all the platoon members names along with roll number and rank and has photographs of every platoon. At the back of the book there are rolls of honour. I can scan pages from the book if anyone is interested in its contents.

hiya john.
welcome to the forum

i have searched through everything that i have, but cant find any record of james.
it looks like he remained on home service in WW1
the service number that you posted[29067] is most likely the correct one,29061 was issued to pte josiah simpson.
he would have attested on 9th dec 1915.
he would have began his service with the 26th res battalion, around 7th-9th june 1916,he would then have been posted to whoever needed his services at the time.

do you know where he was living at the time,or any info that may help us track him down.

Hi John

i have had a search on the national archives site and i agree with Mack, i think he stuck with the 4th battalion and never left the UK

In October 1914  the 4th Battalion moved to Riby.

The battalion remained on the Lincolnshire coast in Humber Garrison until the end of the War. 3rd Battalion at Cleethorpes & 4th Battalion at Riby, Tetney & Grimsby. (Humber Garrison).

cheers

Thank you both for your efforts in finding information for me. I now know a little more about what my great grandfather got up to at that time.

Hi Wendi

I have a marriage certificate for him and he got married on the 20th March 1907 at the age of 21 so he would have been around 29?

Wendi

Great stuff !!

Does it give a profession?........

OK so OK, I'm nosey by nature, but really I am looking for a reason for him not going abroad  :-\ :)

The name 'Ellen Barnett' does not ring any bells yet but then i have not got very far with other relations to know. Emily Keeling is a bit of a mystery. I have looked for more info on her but not found much other than her dad was called 'Hiram'. That is what the name looks like on the marriage certificate.

It looks like James William Barnett took a apprenticeship at a printers. I have apprenticeship papers for him attached.
