James Thomas Newman Marchant

My great grandfather was a Private in the 2nd Manchesters (as recorded on my grandmother's birth certificate).
How do I find out more about him?
Did he serve in S.Africa?
Any medals or promotion?
Did he stay on to WW1?

I am new to this. Thanks for your help.

I guess your grandmother must have been born between 1899 and 1902 ?

Can you give us your GGrandfathers name and any other information you have that might help us please

My great grandfather was James Thomas Newman Marchant.
His wife and children were living in Gorton, Manchester in February 1900 when his daughter's birth was being registered.
James was born in about 1870 in Manchester.
Any info on his military service would be most welcome.

Good luck with your search.
After the record on my grandmother's birthcertificate, our next record is her marriage certificate, 1921.
James was recorded as father, occupation: gold miner, Australia!
I suspect he went to seek his fortune after leaving the Manchesters.
It would seem possible he went to Australia straight from South Africa, having heard about the gold finds
in Oz from his contacts in SA.

I tried a search in the aussie records, quite a few marchants but no match that i could find, you may wish to try a few variations of spelling

nothing shows on the NA search, a few J Marchants but nothing positively id him

I've been researching further my great grandfather.
He sometimes used the surname McNeil or McNeale, such as when he was in prison!
Perhaps he had some thing to hide.
 
Could you check the Manchesters for this optional surname?
