Trying to trace any history of my great- grandfather. Listed on my grandfathers birth certificate as ""Sergeant 2nd Manchester Regiment" and at that time (1906) based in Aldershot. Took part in the Boer War according to my father. thank you!!

I have found a Sgt G.Clarke on both medal rolls for the SA War.

4778 Sgt G.Clarke 2nd Bn Queen's South Africa Medal with clasp (Witteburgen,Cape Colony & Transvaal).
4778 Sgt G.Clarke 2nd Bn Kings South Africa Medal with Clasp 1901-1902. In the remarks it says deceased?

Do you have anymore info on your GG/F

PS welcome to the site

Hi DR2 and a Warm Welcome to Our Forum  ;D

I'm so glad to see that themonsstar can put a number to your GGrandfather !

Do you have any other info regarding him?  Your grandfathers mothers' name or anything else that would help to take things further.

I would not necessarily expect a marriage certificate of 1906 to note that the father was deceased.......(even today for that matter, the certs only identify info that the prospective bride and groom provide)

My grandfathers birth certificate of 1906 appears to have my GG father as registering the birth - as this was 1906 I'd be surprised if he was deceased!  His address is given as "10B Square, Aldershot" which would imply he was still in the army?
Thank you - I don't have any other information. My father is the last of the line so to speak and this is all he remembers, I ordered the birth certificate as part of trying to trace the tree but nothing appears on the 1901 census for GH Clarke. Though I do remember a very impressive black and white picture of a man in uniform which was hung at my grandfather's house - I think this was my GG father but the picture has long since disappeared.

Sorry DR2 re-reading your post I would have thought it obvious that I incorrectly read it as marriage certificate.  ::)

Being as the birth  ;D certificate says

""Sergeant 2nd Manchester Regiment"
I don't think there can be too much doubt  ???  The Museum in Aldershot holds good info.

http://www3.hants.gov.uk/aldershot-museum and I'm sure can help with 10B.
