Hello everyone. I'm really pleased to have found this site! I'm searching for any army info regarding my grandfather who died when my father was a child (my father is 83 next month and I'm trying to surprise him).

All I have to go on is the attached Medal Certificate. - So any advice will be extremely gratefully received!
Thank you.
Howard.

Howard, the following additional info can be obtained from the Medal Index Card. He wasn't entitled to the 1914/15 Star Medal, which means he went overseas after 1st January 1916. The reference to SWB means that he was medically discharged (probably due to wounds or sickness).

Hope this helps
Pete

That's really interesting Pete. thanks for such a quick response too.
My father was only eight (I think) when his Father died and remembers him coming home and being bed-ridden for months before he died. Of course this was during WW2, but he thinks he might have served in both wars.

It would be lovely to know which battalion he was in, as I believe there are records kept in Manchester Cathedral which might also give more information, - or so I'm told!

Howard,
If he died during WWII you can try and get a copy of his service papers from the MOD which should answer many of your questions.
Have a look at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records

Mack (and others). I'm so grateful for this. Can you tell me, - is all this information available in the public domain, - or do you have special access to military records of this sort? Sorry, - but I'm not very knowledgeable about all this and I'd like to add as much information as possible to my Father's knowledge of his father.
Very many thanks. Howard.

I have been updating my grandfather's information on the Imperial War Museum 'lives of the first world war' project. Accessed here: https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/867596#stories

This has been really interesting so far. I'm determined to find out a lot more!
Thank you chaps, - you've been so helpful  :)
