Hello everyone. I'm searching for any info on the 2nd Battalion's war record. I also have some specific questions that perhaps some of the experts can answer.

Was the 2nd Battalion ever stationed in Ploegsteert "Plugstreet" Wood?

What was the specific barrack location in Ireland prior to the Battalion's departure for Le Harve?

Are there any only diaries, combat reports, dispatches, etc on the Battalion's activities '14-'18?

hi Alex

and welcome to the group

i think you would be best to have a look at this section on our main site which gives you a pretty good potted history of the battalion during the great war

http://www.themanchesters.org/2nd%20batt.htm

regarding where they were in Ireland  before they left for france, the War Diary and regimental history doesn't actually state where they were, only that they en-trained for Dublin, i may be wrong but i thought that was from Curragh barracks

Thank you Chris. I did spot the Battalion's history and printed it. While it was most helpful in giving me an overall picture, I was looking to see some of the details.
I plan to visit Britain in a year or so. Does the Manchester mueseum or IWM have records, maps and other research material I could sift through about the Batttalion when I cross the pond?

Thank you for the warm welcome and I appreciate the help.

Kindest Regards,
Alex

no problem Alex

yes, the museum and the archives has loads ( probably tons) of information, the IWM has as well, but so much they cover hundreds of year of military history

we'd be very happy to try and help you before you come over, i don't want to deprive you of the fun of personally searching out the details of your family tree ;D  but you will save a lot of time by asking more specific questions on this forum

cheers

Well believe it or not, my family connections to WWI consist of a three Great Grandfathers, two American doughboys (one who saw combat) and another who served in the Italian Army.

I'm just an Anglophile with a longtime affinity for the British WWI expreience. I was researching Regiments and found this one to have an excellent heritage. I build models of the Great War.

Hi.
I know I have only just joined the forum but I do have a bit of information that could help you. My Grandad - Charles Herbert Dronfield who I now know was in this batallion (thanks to members) told me that he was stationed in Tipperary. I am pretty confident that this is accurate because I moved to Ireland whilst he was still alive and  I lived beside the Curragh. If had been there I am sure he would have mentioned it as he wrote to me regularly and mentioned his time in Ireland with affection. He remembered that he had been in Tipperary, but not the town.
