Hi, a friend showed me photographs of WW1 and Boer War memorabilia that belonged to his great grandfather who was a veteran of both. I think the medal in the photograph is from the Boer War (because I don't recognise it as WW1), Can anyone help?

Cheers
Pete

Its the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, its the 2nd type for the regular Army from about 1874 upto 1901?, it should have his name around its side.

...or (if he's really lucky!) it could be a pre 1902 DCM!  (Unfortunately, it's most likely to be a LSGC though)

I've asked for a photo of the other side of the medal and the name from around the outside. On the original photo, by zooming in, I can see the name "Ashton". However, everything else in the collection belonged to L/C John Dooley, Lancashire Fusiliers and verteran of the Boer War. The following is a summary of the info I have on him.

Corporal John Dooley (Service no. 10677) served with 'C' company, 12 platoon of the 15th Lancashire Fusiliers ("the 1st Salford Pals").

He had originally enlisted in the Lancashire Fusiliers in November 1914. He later served as Private Dooley (426950) in the Labour Corps and transferred to Reserve on 23rd July 1919.

He lived with his wife at 53 Caroline Street, Irlam and was employed at the CWS Soap Works. He had previously served with the East Lancashire Regiment in the South African War.

His friend, Hugh Connor was killed alongside him on the first day of the battle of the Somme at Thiepval.

John Dooley wrote in a letter to his wife "I have lost all my comrades, some of the best lads that ever lived. Poor Hughie and I agreed that if either of us got killed or wounded the one who was left should break the news to those at home and fate has decided that this painful task should fall on me. Poor Hughie was killed by shell-fire in the first few minutes of the battle and it is a consolation to know that he suffered no pain. I find it hard to realise that he is dead."

Thanks for all your help

no it's not - that medal had a young Victoria head obverse and had a lion over a shield and assagai reverse.  The SA medal on your image is on the left with the LSGC on the right.
