Coal Miners During WW1

Could any foum member tell me what was the position regading coal miners during WW1, all my grandmothers brothers were miners at Agecroft or Pendlebury Pits. Would they have served in the forces or been restricted to the mines.

a lot of miners signed up at the start of the war and were enlisted into the army, however when it was realised that it was a mistake and coal was running out, some were brought back to the UK to service the mines

the 5th battalion certainly had it's share of miners

My grandmother Maria Willetts had six brothers , is there anyway that I could find out if anyone with the surname Willetts from Salford area served in the Manchester Regiment in WW1.
