Richard Hill 19th Manchester
« on: May 12, 2023, 04:38:10 PM »
Hi, I'm looking for information on my Great grandfather, Richard Hill. I know he was in 19th battalion. His service  No 12104. I believe he was injured, came home and sent back to the Front after recovering. Haven't been able to trace any battalion photo with him in it.
Any info appreciated.

Thanks :)

Hi Horace
Richard Hill had previously served in 3rd Bn King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment ‘6581’ (Bought out 1903) when he enlisted in 4th City (19th) Bn Manchester Regiment on 12/09/1914. He was employed as a Carter and lived with his wife, Sarah Elizabeth and two children at 16 Lancashire St, Newton Heath.  Posted to 26th (Reserve) Bn on 13/08/1915, he did not join the original contingent of 19th Bn when it embarked in Nov 1914 – possibly due to injury or illness.  Richard was posted to France with 19th Bn on 16/03/1916 and promoted to Acting Corporal two days later. He was treated for influenza in April 1916 and rejoined 19th Bn that month.
Wounded by a Gun Shot Wound to the face / jaw at Montauban on 01/07/1916, he was posted to Depot at Home on 06/07/1916. Richard reverted to Pte.  Granted 9 days furlough in Aug 1916, he was posted to the Humber Defences with 4th Bn on 09/12/1916 and returned to France on 20/12/1916. Richard joined 11th Bn in the field on 24/12/1916.
Richard was transferred to Reserve Class Z (fit A1) from 11th Bn on 31 January 1919.  He received British War and Victory medals for his service.
Richard’s name should be found in the Platoon photos at Heaton Park in 1915, but I can’t see him in the index.  Have a look through each roll and see if you can spot him. http://themanchesters.org/forum/index.php?board=46.0
Welcome to the forum.
Tim
Ps My Grandad was also wounded at Montauban, just a scrape though.

Tim, thanks for the swift reply. You've given me information I didn't know about. He did suffer a wound above his lips and apparently always had a moustache afterwards to hide it. Sorry your grandfather was injured too but suppose they were the lucky ones.
I shall have a look at the photos

Thanks

 :)

Julie / Horace,

Photo now posted below.
The most common images of the Manchesters in front of domestic buildings were 20-22nd Bn at boarding houses in Morecambe.
Not all of the men have shoulder titles and the hi-res images doesn't clearly show the others.  The City Bns proudly wore their insignia so it may not be Pals, or perhaps these are recent recruits.  I think they are wearing Khaki so that dates it to early 1915 or late spring if they were recent additions.  Otherwise it was taken in later years.
What makes you think it could be 19th Bn?  If you think it may be Richard Hill, I wonder if it could be men outside billets later in the war - possibly 25th Bn in 1916 or 4th Bn at Cleethorpes.  This could explain the absence of insignia.
Do you think Richard is one of the chaps with a moustache?
Take caution because I'm just guessing.

Tim, thank you for posting that. It was in an old family photograph album. I did wonder if Richard Hill was one of the chaps with a moustache! Referring to my post of a couple weeks ago, your information said Richard Posted to 26th (Reserve) Bn on 13/08/1915.

If Richard had the moutache then, I think he may be the man in the back row.  I may be wrong but the chaps on the right seem to be wearing navy tram guard uniforms, so enlisted later than Richard.  He was 5' 6" tall & weighed 130lb and it looks like the man in the front row would be taller & heavier.

More specualtion I'm afraid.  As this is your research on Richard, I'll try to merge the two threads.
