Good morning everyone and happy easter. I am researching family members on my grandmas side, a number of which served in the Manchester Regiment. They include an older brother Henry (Harry) Seddon born in Wigan on 22 Nov 1899. From 1921 census information it appears he was serving in Cork at the time of the Census which was June, which I now understand would have placed him there at the time of the killing of 3 of his colleagues. I wondered what more detailed information I might access about that and also how long he might have served in the regiment. He married in 1928 and was not in the regiment at that time.

Hi Speak,
I think public records are limited for the period in Ireland.  This is an interesting article- https://www.tameside.gov.uk/MuseumsandGalleries/Object-Focus-Razor-belonging-to-Leo-Murphy
Cork City Council has recently agreed that they would like Leo Murphy's belongings back.  I can't disagree but I'd like to know where three further missing Privates from the Manchester Regiment may be.

Welcome to the forum
Due to his age I would suggest that he probably didn't see active service during the Great War and was among the last to be conscripted. There are 2 or 3 Harry Seddons in the medal rolls but without a service number it is impossible to tell. Many soldiers who were too young for active service were retained by the Army till at least 1920 possibly longer.
The MoD has released names of those with birthdates prior to 1901 who were still serving post 1921 - scroll down and you will find the links.

Thats been really helpful, thank you. Using his birthdate I now appear to have a service number 3644243.

What else can I access using that number please?

charlie

His number indicates that he enlisted into the South Lancashire Regiment and therefore must have been transferred to the Manchesters at a later date. When army numbers were introduced after the Great War, soldiers kept their allocated number no matter how many different regiments they served with.

Thanks for that. Are there any databases that would allow me to enter the service number to find out more information on Henry (Harry) Seddon ?

charlie

None that I am aware of. You could apply to the MoD for a copy of his service record
