Hulme Pals

I am trying to find out what battalion/unit that my great uncles and great grandfather served in, They all came from Hulme,and I believe there were sections called "Pals" within the regiment.
Where would they have enlisted?
I do recall snippets of information  from my grandfather that his two uncles died in Ypres, but no information about my great grandfather.
Any information will be greatly received

Hi Mack, thanks for the reply, their names were Richard Johnstone, William Johnstone  and Robert Johnstone.
It is believed that William and Richard were killed in Ypres,  I dont have any information for my great grandfather, Robert.
I am pretty certain that they lived in Trentham Street, Hulme.

now he was born in Glasgow but enlisted in Manchester and would have been a regular soldier

Richard is even more of a puzzle, no men of that name died in the regiment as far as i can see

Tony, this is going to sound a bit funny, but are you certain of the spelling of the surname? i'm thinking Johnstone could easily be Johnson or the like?

Hi Chris, thank you for the welcome message and looking into my enquiry.

The name is definately Johnstone because my name is Johnstone.
At the moment, the details are a bit sketchy as I am trying to remember bits of conversation picked up while I was a young lad, also, I am putting together my family tree and I have managed go back to the first census in 1841.
I have got all the names and where they lived in census order.
My grandad Robert Johnstone was born in 1903, I have got his birth certificate, and it was his father, Robert, and his two uncles that fought in WW1 with the Manchesters, or so it is believed, but I have yet to find out for sure.
I have loaned all my work to an uncle who lives in Wales, and until I get it back, I cannot check the names with what we have found so far.
I have took down the details that you left in your last message regarding William Johnstone, and during my search, I have come accross an Alexander Johnstone who was killed in 1917, he too was from Hulme, so its possible that he is one of my ancestors.

PTE 16278 ROBERT JOHNSTONE MAN REG AND 694030 LABOUR CORPS,

FROM 181 ROBERT JOHNSTONE ON MEDAL CARDS

on medal cards, only 18 FOR Richard JOHNSTONE  NONE FOR MAN REG,
AND 3 FOUND FOR WILLIAM JOHNSTONE IN THE MANCHESTER REGIMENT,
WILLIAM 9606  YOU HAVE THIS INFO,
WILLIAM D 7265 MAN REG AND 604964 LABOUR CORPS
WILLIAM 3113  MAN REG AND 389345 LABOUR CORPS

Hi Tony, it was great info that, thank you.
I think we can safely say that William 9606 is one of them that I am looking for, and as for Richard, I was only assuming that he may of served in the Manchester Regiment because I remember my dad saying that they both got killed in Ypres and the Manchester Regiment is who they served with.
I will be going to the library in Ashton soon to see what I can find, and maybe take a look in the museum.
