Pte Richard Jones
« on: June 09, 2022, 04:21:29 PM »
Hello Your forum is quite fantastic, thanks to everyone who have posted such great material.
I'm doing my family tree and I discovered that apparently my 4xG grandad was in the 63rd Regiment of foot. (I haven't seen any concrete proof of the connection between this soldier and my relative, but so far there is a fair bit of circumstantial evidence.)
I have made a memorial for my 4xGGF on fold3 (I haven't actually seen all of the linked sources, because I don't have a subscription.)
https://www.fold3.com/memorial/657792291/richard-jones/sources
This soldier Richard Jones was discharged in 1829 on a chilled pension.
My relative Richard Jones sailed in 1830 to the Swan River Colony in Western Australia with Lieutenant Henry Bull (R.N.). While in Australia he worked for Henry Bull to serve out is his indenture - on a farm located only a short distance from the Upper Swan barracks where some of the 63rd regt were stationed.
I am looking forward to reviewing all the post on the 63rd to see if I can find any more clues. I see this post shows that pte richard jones received a general service medal for guadeloupe:

Thanks again.

ok so I literally just found this
http://www.themenbehindthemedals.org.uk/index.asp?page=full&mwsquery=(%7BPerson%20identity%7D=%7BJones,%20R%7D)
which throws a shadow on the Guadeloupe record.
it seems to suggest that Richard Jones in Captain Lynch's company, and he would've had to applied for it by 1847. My relative arrived in Australia in 1830,an so would not have been in the UK to place such an order.
Some of my sources need to be reviewed.

I found a record on Ancestry, for "Richard Jones" in the 63rd Regiment 1st bn.
https://search.ancestry.com.au/collections/60546/records/241069/
Muster Start 25 Dec 1814 End 24 Mar 1815 at Grenada
It says "From No 7 Company 25 December" (I'm assuming 1814)

If you want to put together your ancestor's military career your best bet is to go to The National Archives at Kew and go through the 63rd's muster rolls, month by month.
It's a bit of a trawl but it will tell you what you want to know and you may turn up some surprises.

Oh I would love to do that! and I definitely will! .... but that will have to wait for the next time I go to the UK.
There are a few scanned images on the Australian Joint Copying project, but only for the time period relating to the colonisation of the Swan River, so circa 1829. Pte Richard Jones appears on those musters, which indicates that he was put on a chilled pension instead of being sent to the colony.
I couldn't find any earlier records on Ancestry during the last free access period (but I haven't checked FindMyPast or Fold3 yet. Waiting for free access, maybe in November)

Now this might be a complete coincidence, but the free access to fold3 this weekend has not opened up any other new leads for me!!
I found an Pension record for William Jones, with very similar details to the Pension record for Richard Jones:
https://www.fold3.com/image/586891175
Born in the parish of Llanawrin, in or near the town of Montgomery, in the county of Montgomery.
Enlisted in 63rd Regt in Clonmel Tipperary the day before Richard Jones: 4th May 1812
Went to West indies same time period as Richard Jones. 1813 - 1819
Pension in 1824, 5 years before Richard.
