Pte Charles Thomas 8th Bn. Manchester Regiment (Defence Force) 8/MR/392, died at Manchester Royal Infirmary on 20/6/1921, age 34. Recruited for 90 days emergency service during the civil unrest of 1921. No documents besides the Soldiers' Effects Register. Buried at Phillips Park Cemetery, CE I/2565 (or CE J/2568 according to Ancestry).

This is a mystery.  The burial record says he was a soldier and the DC may say the same, but still not adequate evidence to show embodied service, unless cause of death indicates such.  It's strange to see no NoK on the Effects, so no Dependent pension.
He appears to be buried in a common grave, so no family connection found.
A man born in 1887/88 and called up in 1921 must have served 1914-18...

Did you download the burial record? Just wondering which grave ref is correct, since Ancestry and Manchester City Council both say different. Is there an address for him, besides the place of death?

Hi Paul,
I just look up the MCC database https://www.burialrecords.manchester.gov.uk/
Terry has credits on the account to upload the burial register, although I suspect this may not show who he is buried with.

Hi Paul,
John Lynch also died with 8th Bn in the Defence Force and he is commemorated by CWGC.  His Effects seem to be very similat to Charles Thomas.  Have you asked Terry about this case? https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/789335:60506?_phsrc=hMb3458&_phstart=successSource&ml_rpos=18&queryId=b9fd224dbde71d9684fb1c9c1b793c9b

It's the same question for Kennedy http://themanchesters.org/forum/index.php?topic=11420.msg73404#msg73404

Terry says he will look at the Defence Force cases sometime in the new year.

Unmarked grave, there's a slightly unhelpful photo of some grass on Find-a-Grave: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/141511344/charles-thomas#add-to-vc
