Thomas John Turner 1900
« on: February 16, 2022, 11:51:49 AM »
Hi, I have a photo of the above in Manchester Regiment uniform (I have tried to post the photo, however the site won’t accept it). He never spoke about his military service, so I am searching for any information. I presume he was conscripted April 1918. He was the 1st born child of George and Mary Jane Turner, born in Bootle, Merseyside. He was a carpenter/ joiner by trade. I have been told that he would have received 3 months training - which could have been either in the UK or abroad, so it is possible he saw active service. As far as I know, he wasn’t awarded any medals, so I speculate that he may have been part of the occupation forces. I have been told that his cap badge and Sphinx on his epaulette show him to be part of the Manchester regiment. He also has Lewis Gunner and sharp shooter emblems on his sleeve. I have used Ancestry. Find my Past and the National Archives to try and uncover any information. I am aware that documents have been destroyed “ burnt documents” so I may never find anything - however, if anyone can provide information, a way forward for me, I’d be most grateful.

(Image now attached again, albeit landscape rather than portrait.)

Hi Elizabeth,
I couldn't find anything helpful, sadly.  I'm intrigued by the Sphinx shoulder title, which may help place a date on the photo??

The MoD held some service records for men who served after the Armistice and these have now been passed to the National Archives.  Please see this link which includes a FOA letter and 8 schedules of names.  I can't find Thomas among them but please double check. If he was there you could seek the service record.

I'm not sure how comprehensive theses schedules are and its not clear what cut off date applied to the MoD taking the files eg 1919 or 20??.  I previosuly found an officer who served from 1914 and again in the 2nd War.   Another reseource drawing a blank probably.
Welcome to the forum.

Well done Cliff
Does anyone know when Sphinx shoulder titles were used?  I don't recall seeing these before.

Only too pleased to help you Elizabeth.
I right clicked on the photo and saved it then turned it. Twice it would only post in landscape so I re named the file and slightly cropped it which may not have been necessary. It posted in portrait for me then. There was no need to resize as it was well within the 250Kb limit for attachments.

Tim, the only thing I could find on the sphinx was a reference to it being introduced to commemorate the Egypt battles of 1801. The museum site has a couple of references to it one being a plate with it on and the other a uniform with it as a collar one.

Thanks again. I wonder why he had the Sphinx, as it appears to be very unusual. Hopefully at some point, I’ll be able to let you know
