David Lenahan had been a dock labourer for Manchester Ship Canal Company when he enlisted in 4th Bn on 23/03/1915. He had originally enlisted in the Bn on 09/09/1914 with an unclear explanation. David claimed to be 44y 10m but this was significantly under his true age. His next of kin was Priscilla who he recorded as marrying on 04/06/1879 – apparently aged 9!
Born in Edinburgh, he had enlisted '2202' in the 101st Royal Bengal Fusiliers as David Leonard on 05/10/1872, aged 18.  He was then already serving with the 6th Royal Lancs Militia. Receiving a Good Conduct Badge and having a short appointment as Lance Corporal, David served in Malta and Cyprus before he was transferred to Reserve on 19/12/1878, where he served in Manchester District until discharge on 04/10/1884.
David served with the Manchesters in the Humber defences and was appointed Lance Corporal on 24/01/1916. He was discharged from 4th Bn at Tetney due to Valvular Disease of the Heart (VDH) on 06/06/1916. This originated in December 1915 at Riby Camp. VDH was not attributed to service but aggravated by it.
David Lenehan died from heart disease and bronchitis aggravated by service on 21/09/1918, aged 65.
Husband of Priscilla Lenehan of 25 Sunnyside Street, Salford. The couple had ten children.
David's son, Patrick, was killed in action at Gallipoli on 25/04/1915, serving '2715' with the Lancashire Fusiliers.

The DC states David Lenehan died from Bronchitis and Heart Failure at 25 Sunnyside, aged 65. Dock Labourer and Ex-Lance Corporal Manchester Regiment No 3020.

While the WFA card and pension record refers to heart disease aggravated by service this may not be adequate to cover "heart failure".  Bronchitis is also mentioned on the WFA card but this is not substantiated in the pension record.

The evidence doesn't support commemoration. Now submitted to CWGC, as the symptoms of bronchitis were noted on the pension record.

Buried at Salford (Weaste) Cemetery 20/09/1918. Burial Register required.
