Bury Archives - Obituary Photos
« on: August 14, 2021, 02:07:47 PM »
Hundreds of images in alphabetical order, but no apperent index at the moment. There is a good search function. I'm going to see if there are any 17th Bn men hidden away.
Here's what they say:-
These photographs have been extracted from the following newspapers: The Bury Times, The Bury Guardian, The Radcliffe Times, The Radcliffe Guardian, and The Ramsbottom Observer. This collection represents all the Bury Soldiers that were listed in the local newspapers regardless of regiment or location. If they appeared in one of the papers then they have been included in this collection. These images are not high quality due to the nature of the source but we do have plans to add higher quality images in future. These images also give the soldiers last known address which we have made every attempt to show on a map. In the instances where their last known address no longer exists we will be plotting the present day location.

HOWARTH          HERBERT             H            21                          01/07/1916         Private  17th Bn.               ‘8658’    PERONNE ROAD CEMETERY, MARICOURT              Son of Robert and Mary Ann Howarth, of 100, Walmersley Rd., Bury, Lancs. Worked for Parr’s Bank, Bury, he  was originally buried in the French line of attack in the area of Faviere and Faviere Support trench, forming the German front line.  Herbert was last seen in Montauban near a crushed dugout on 2nd July[12].  One may speculate he had been directed, or helped eastwards, where he may have been killed on the battlefield and buried close by.  There is no other explanation why Herbert was buried in the French area.  The other men buried in the plot are August 1916 losses from other Divisions.  The group were relocated to Peronne Road in October 1918. Brother Ernest was also killed on 1st July.

Photos of Ernest and Herbert in archive. Herbert's is better from RBS Archive

Thanks Tim, this is a great resource. Do you know if there's a way of searching by battalion? I'm interested in the 11th, however it looks like I have to search on "Manchester" and then open each entry to check the battalion.

Cheers
Pete

Hi Pete,
I've been working through the Manchester Regiment entries and recognising or guessing names.  No search function for Bn, as far as I can see.
