hi there

thanks very much for speedy reply. As far as I am aware he was not in the 1st ww - its one of the things I am trying to find out. It appears he moved to the manchester area just before the war but not certain. My grandmother was born in Jabourg (Guernsey) and christened in the Parish of St Martin (Guernsey)- is it possible he was on "tour" on guernsey around this time ?. Thomas was born about 1880 (Southwerk - London).

any more help would be great

Hi Philip

and welcome to the forum

the 2nd battalion arrived in the Channel Islands in 1904 and stayed there until 1907, they were joined by the 3rd and 4th battalion who were disbanded there

it's very possible he served in South Africa in the Boer War

i think you'd be best to post a new thread in the boer war section and we'll see if the experts there can come up with anything for you

Hi there

As you can see there has been a fairly long gap between my last post and todays - that's life !
Am very grateful for the info Mack gave me re Thomas Ambrose Walker (TAW) 17788.... (see above posts from Mack) plus thanks for the info re his Boar War activities - very interesting indeed but and this is a big but - the story gets really interesting and extremely complicated.

My sister has found papers for Thomas Walker  (TW) 3350 (?) - who signed up 12/10/14 with 8th Batt Mcr Reg at Ardwick. The home addresses are the same for TAW and TH but different wives. TAW mentions children TH doesn't. TH was discharged from 8th batt on 19/11/14 no reasons.

We have also found a record for him having joined the Grenadier Guards 2257 Private in 1907 and deserted in 1910 (?) with prison sentence of at least 1 year (would this have been more for desertion and would it hinder his signing up in Oct 14 ?).

We also have a possibility with MT Co ASC in 1918.

He was working with the Manchester Railway in 1939 but is it possible to find more details on this site ?

I hope someone can guide us in our search

thanks

Philip
