HI what a great site you have i have been looking in for about 6 months now but only just registered i have been trying to find info on my Grandfather William Stott from c-o-m or moss side all i have found out from my father is that he was a cook for lord Derby & was gassed some where in france. I do hope that you will be able to find out a little more for me & my Dad who is now 83 & only has a few memories that we can talk about.

your grandfather,may not have served overseas,he may have stayed on duty with lord derby.
IIR.lord derby was honourary colonel of the 19th manchesters.

Thanks for the prompt reply i don't think i will tell my Dad that he has a common name & that it will make it harder to find out any info on his father. He was on a pension of 8s due to him being gassed would this help narrow down the list of Stott's.

Lord Derby was also the instigator of the Liverpool and Manchester Pals battalions,

i think we need a little more information before we pin him down, do you have his medals? they will have his service number on them or perhaps a home address

Does your father have either William's birth or marriage certificate, or know when and where he was born?

If he received a pension there should be paperwork for his somewhere !

Sorry for the delay in my reply but i have had to double check all my info as i have only recently started on this side of the family due to lack of info from my Dad.
William was born 1892/3 to John & Elizabeth no cert this info is from his grave stone died 8 January 1961 aged 68 he married Elsie Smith date unable to find but eldest son was born september 1921 his mother remarried in 1894 & was at 18 Walter street Hulme at this time. I no longer have access to 1901 census to look up the address  which would be under the name Albert Edward wroe.

Hi Dave,

I have done some digging around for you and the family at 18, Walter St. Hulme on the 1901 Census are the Barnes family headed up by Arthur Barnes a French Polisher and his wife Elizabeth nee Ross, so your lot had moved on before 1901.

The closest match I can get for William on the 1901 Census is:

9, Blackburn Street, Hulme

Albert E Wroe 32 Housepainter b. Manchester
Eliz Wroe 33 b. Coventry
Jno Wroe 8 at school b. Manchester
Lillian Wroe 6 at school b. Manchester

Maybe William's name is miss transcribed, or he had a middle name of John ???  Does any of the other info ring bells ?

I would suggest, if you wish to delve further, you start off with your fathers birth certificate and work back methodically, things should unravel themselves as you go.

I think you have found the right person as my father now tells me that John was his fathers middle name i also know that Lillian was a godparent to my fathers brother so thanks for the info you have been helpful in sorting out this for me.

yes, all WW1 medals were impressed with name rank and regiment

Hi Dave

He was Pte. 1248 in The Manchester Regiment, and later Pte. 444654 of The Labour Corps. 

The most lightly explanation for this is that he was wounded, returned to Britain, and when recovered served again in The Labour Corps, which was made up of ex-front line soldiers or men who were unfit or too old for front line service.

His service record will be available from The National Archives, and eventually on Ancestry.com, however I can not see it there yet.

I am attaching his MIC for you.

The Silver War Badge (SWB), sometimes erroneously called the Silver Wound Badge, was authorised in September 1916 and takes the form of a circular badge with the legend "For King and Empire-Services Rendered" surrounding the George V cypher. The badge was awarded to all of those military personnel who were discharged as a result of sickness or wounds contracted or received during the war, either at home or overseas.
