Thanks again Timberman, but dont see anything matching.
I have magnified the pic & tried to zoom the badge, although not very clear here it is.
Remembering he was from salford, Manchester area, born 1936 & possibly pic taken 1954 56.

My first thought on the badge in question was ACC, but I think the shoulder titles are wrong for this.

The ACC badge looks to be favourite. I have just registered on their forum and hopefully it will be confirmed as their cap badge.
here's a pic of their badge, not sure if this was the badge worn in the 50's yet.

That was my first guess the ACC badge has a bar under it with "We Sustain" from 1973, the ones in your photo do not so it is a possibility.
It looks like a "Kings" Crown in your photo so that would be pre 1953.
Have a look at this site I think there are about 4 other options for the badge on the site posted by Timberman: http://www.militarybadges.org.uk/
Some options attached.
One not on the badges site is the Army Cadet Force.

Thanks for the help.
Now I have more info and wondered if you could point me in the right direction.

I have a number and a few clues for my father, not sure if there are numbers missing? these are from an old document of which I dont have a copy, yet.
OK i have Melvyn Jones, private 2301668 and belive it say 10th something? not sure of what this is? this is around 1955?

Are there enough numbers for this to be his army number?
Any ideas where I can get more info if this number is correct?

Oh sorry Steve, I got so wrapped up in the badge thing I overlooked the fact that you were looking for, in essence, your fathers service record

Download and fill in the forms from here : http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html

You'll need to pay £30 unless your Mum is still alive, and you will need his death certificate, and some patience, but don't worry about regiment, rank or number they will find him for you.

Thats ok but he wasnt married to my mother so how would I go about next of kin proof on this form?
Just found out by searching, he died in 1988 so I have sent for a copy of his death cert would this be enough for me to get info on his service records?
Anyone know what would be meant by 'Uprating' which I belive is written on his marriage cert?

Steve, you simply make the declaration that you are his son, and enclose a copy of his death certificate. If you download the forms I think it will become clearer to you.

I Emailed the Veterans & they sent me the form to dwnload, just waiting on a copy of his death cert.
What info is usually in the service records, just out of curiosoty?

You can expect, where & when joined, where he served, good/bad conduct, discharge notes, stuff like that.

Just to update.
It is the army catering corps he was in as i now have his marriage cert to confirm this.
Will be interesting read then when i finally get hold of a copy of his service records.

The uprating actually said catering

seems the info i was getting was from an old copy of his marriage cert, third hand.
