Thanks for checking Cliff; unlike the other guys I've been researching John Mahoney (who fought in WW2) was someone I knew very well. He died when I was 30 and was an incredible guy; changhi and the railway and i never heard him once say anything against his captors; "no point being bitter; i have a lovely family and that's what's important". Never known anyone to forgive like him. Thanks for the research, even if you haven't got anything on my guy the job you chaps do is fantastic. Much appreciated.

Seeing the PoW card for John Carney brought back many good memories of life with the Manchesters in Germany and Malaya. Company Sergeant 'Jackie' Carney BEM died 4th January 1972. His stepfather was Company Sergeant Major 'Snowy' Bell who served for thirty years in the Manchesters. His stepbrother Norman 'Tinker' Bell spent his life in the Manchesters and latterly as  Staff Sergeant Insructor in the Army Physical Training Corps but attached to the Regiment.

Jackie Carney enlisted as a boy soldier in August 1931 and for ten years was a member of the band.  A fine boxer he won the Boys Army Championship in successive years and was the undisputed Battalion Bantamweight Champion.  Twice Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the British Empire Medal for his work as a PoW.  A delightful personality and a splendid Warrant Officer II in Wuppertal, Berlin and Malaya. 

Following his retirement from the Regular Army he enlisted in the Territorials and became a Sergeant Major with the Ashton-under-Lyne Battalion.
