Major James Fitzgerald Bannatyne

Major Bannatyne is not to be found in any of the Battalion photographs on the website. When were the photographs taken, and are there any others available?

According to the records I have seen, he was transferred from the 11th Hussars to the 23rd Battalion, the Manchester Regiment, in November, 1914. He signed the war diary for April, 1916, as Major, Comdg. 23rd Battalion, and he died of wounds after an artillery barrage on 14th May, 1916.

Major Bannatyne is not included in the photograph of the 91st Bde Depot officers & supernumary officers in the City Battalions Book of Honour.

There are other websites with photographs of the Regiment and its battalions!

Belville,

The Bn. photos were taken c. April 1915, exact dates not known.
The following extract from the LG shows he wasnt a Major in the Manchester Regiment until 9.11.1915.

According to the SUPPLEMENT TO THE LONDON GAZETTE, 27 NOVEMBER, 1915

The Manchester Regiment.
Captain James FitzG. Bannatyne (llth(Prince Albert's Own) Hussars) to be temporary Major. Dated 9th November, 1915.

Thanks.

I now think he was probably with the 11th Hussars until after 2nd Ypres: late May, 1915.
