Horace and Thomas Northcote

Hello everyone. Thank you for allowing me to join your forum. Whilst trying to find out some of my grandfather's history (paternal) I thankfully discovered this forum. In doing so I noticed a number of posts in 2008/9 discussing my grandfather Thomas V Northcote and his brother Horace V Northcote. I realise those posts were some time ago but would be delighted to update those interested in TV Northcote's  side of the family. I noticed that one of the authors of the above posts was "Big Pete". Judging by his posts I believe we are related and I may be able to fill in some of the gaps he has on my grandfather's side of the family.
Horace and Thomas were indeed brothers and both exceptional marksmen who shot for GB and Thomas went on to shoot for GB in the 1924 Paris Olympics. Hopefully this post will generate some interest and I can in some way make contact with a long lost family member. Kevin

Hello all. After reading the various posts in 2008 about the Northcote brothers, Horace and Thomas,  l felt there were a few unanswered questions. I can confirm that they were both snipers and were actively involved during the Gallipoli campaign and were both badly wounded and evacuated to Malta. My grandfather Thomas spent a month in hospital there before being sent back to Manchester where he was operated on to repair a shattered left hip. This operation resulted in his left leg being some 3 inches shorter than the right. I can remember him having to have a specially made shoe. This must have been very awkward and indeed painful but I never heard him complain!! I am hoping I can contact "Big Pete" (Smith I think) as he may be a decendant of Horace. Can anyone help? Kevin

Hi Mack. Great to hear from you. You are right, two of Horace's sons, George and John (Jack) were killed during WW11 but he had another son Douglas and a daughter Barbara. Barbara married Duncan Dallas. From their union they had a daughter Elizabeth Dallas who married Yeoman P G Smith. They had 2 daughters and a son Peter.
Judging from the posts submitted in 2008/9 it would certainly appear that "Big Pete" is Peter Smith and is a descendant of Horace Northcote.
His last post in August 2009 said he would be posting some photos acquired after a visit to his elderly uncle, but I can not find any evidence that he did this or that he submitted any further posts. I really hope he is still viewing posts on this forum and we can establish some sort of contact.
One of Thomas Northcote's daughter's granddaughter spent years researching the Northcote family and as a result I have a 150 page record of the family tree. The current lockdown has it's plus points as without all the spare time I have I probably would not be any the wiser about the Manchester Regiment Forum. I just hope I am not too late in reconnecting with family members I only know from reading the family tree.
After WW11 Thomas Northcote"s side of the family started a new life in Kenya. So a whole new chapter in family life opened up so I have much to tell Peter if I can gain contact. Any help would be much appreciated. Kevin
