Hello
« on: November 16, 2020, 04:54:05 PM »
Thanks for letting me join this forum that I have just discovered.
My reason for joining was to see if there was any information about 65th(Manchester) Heavy Anti Aircraft Regiment Royal Artillery.
I know it's RA but they were originally 6th/7th Manchesters before being reformed into AA Role.
I am interested to see if there is any WW2 Memorial to them. Particularly to their losses on the SS Archangel in 1941. It was their single worst casualty event.
Apart from that event, the Regiment had surprisingly few casualties in WW2. I would expect it to be at Stretford Rd if anywhere but I've never heard on any such memorial.
I'm also generally interested in WW1 and a couple of soldiers from the Boer War period.

The ship is listed on the Tower Hill Memorial:

All the information appears to be for the Merchant Navy.

If you have the name of any of the servicemen killed you may find more on the CWGC site:

Hi Cliff and Roy,
Thanks for the welcome.
I've actually got all the names and details of the 17 Crew of the Archangel and 41 men of 65th HAA Regt who died in the air attack.
Also there were 41 men listed on the Army Casualty lists at the time.
I've been able to cross reference them with the  CWGC Lists.
There is actually quite a lot of detail online about the attack and with the information that I had from Dad, and the War Diary,  I've been able to find out quite a lot.

The Regiment was very lucky during the war, apart from this attack, they didn't lose many more men at all. Again, the CWGC site shows that, confirmed by the casualty cards.
In answer to your reply regarding Memorials, I suspect that the only one is the one at Ardwick to the Manchester Artillery which is a replacement for one that was lost in the war.

However it would make more sense for any memorial to be at Stretford Rd in Hulme, which is now University Barracks.
When I get round to this I may be able to use contacts to make a direct enquiry.
Cheers
Tony
