John Giblin Regiment No. 873

My name is Julie and I am researching my family. 

My 3rd great grandfather John Giblin joined up for 21 years with the 63rd regmt of Foot in 1833.  During his service he served 14 years in the East India in Moulmein Burma.  On returning home he joined the militia and became a wardrobe keeper at Colour Court (I think) St James Palace where he died in 1870. 

Does anyone in the forum either have information on or can direct me to where I can find out more about what the conditions may have been like in Moulmein and what he is likely to have been doing whist stationed there.  I am also struggling to find out any further information about his time at St James Palace and wondered if anyone in the forum could help me research this part of his life.

Hi Julie,
I find it increbible to compare notes with someone who is a direct relative of a soldier that pre-dates Queen Victoria and Waterloo.
I assume you've read John's Service Record & Pension on Fold3.  These say he enlisted, aged 18. 

I also found a medal record for a John Gilbin in service of 63rd Regt in New Zealand, where he took part in the Waikato Campaign against the Maoris in 1865. Was this a son?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_of_the_Waikato

As to answering your questions, I'm afraid I can't help. Hopefully one of the members will be able to direct you to some sources.

Hi Tim, thanks for coming back so quickly and I agree! 

Yes i have his record from Fold3, thanks.  I am not sure whether the John Giblin you have found is a son.  I have only found a marriage for the John I am related to in 1854 and I have only found 2 Children Charles and Catherine born after the John Giblin you have found was in New Zealand.  Charles went into the Army Service Corps in 1877 not the 63rd Foot.

The NZ medal awarded to John Giblin was to a soldier in the 65th not the 63rd of Foot.
