Two destroyers of the US navy entered the harbour at Kiirun after unknowingly sailing through a minefield, they were the USS kretchmer and the USS Thomas J Gary, they were joined by the USS Finch and USS Brister the following day

A sailor from the Kretchmer said:
"We began taking on these men, nearly all of them were sick and practically skeletons, but every one of them including those on stretchers had a huge grin on their faces, most of them were British with a few Americans and Dutch POWs and a few other nationals.
After we ferried most of them to the carriers USS Block Island and USS Santee, we along with the other three destroyers and two carriers sailed for Manila on 6th September, arriving on 9th September, where they were taken to the Australian hospital and care centres.
During our trip, some of our boys would sit and chat with the POWs on our Boat, on one occasion some of them told the POWs that they often groaned about the chow on our Boat, but after seeing the state of these men and being told what they had to live on in the camps they made a promise never to complain again about our ships food.
There was a moment when we were feeding them that made me smile, they wanted bread and butter with jam, they seemed to enjoy this more than the roast chicken and ice cream we gave them."
Another sailor from the Kretchmer said:
"We made sure that these boys got all the smokes they wanted including cigars if they want. I noticed one lad who wasn't smoking so I asked him if he smoked, he said he didn't care much for most American cigs, he preferred English ovals. I had obtained a few sleeves of these from some of the navy lads earlier and intended to take them home just for novelties sake. I went to my locker and brought them for him, you should have seen his face light up when I left him, he was making more smoke than the ship.
During breakfast one of the POWs asked if he could have a fried egg, he hadn't had one for over three years. The galley lad said to him "how would you like your dozen eggs done mate.""

You will be asked  later on to fill in a questionnaire.

The following statement was made by 5949700 Sgt. James Winstanley of the 5th Beds and Herts Regiment. 272 Leigh Road, Hindley Green, Wigan.
I was part of 69 group under the command of captain Nigel Evans of the Manchester Regiment, this officer in the finest traditions of the British Army, was an officer and a gentleman, during the voyage on the Hofuku Maru this officer on several occasions tried to steal or buy food for us without success, many times he helped carry me even though he was weak himself. After the sinking, he was taken to Formosa with some others on a destroyer, we followed later. When we arrived at Formosa he was there to meet us. There were many occasions when he was insulted, prodded and kicked by the yellow monkeys but not once did he react, his only consideration was for his men. I hope he feels that those of us who had the good fortune to be associated with him, have the greatest admiration possible for him.
Captain Nigel Keith Evans older brother Major Michael Patrick Ernest Evans was also in the 1st Battalion The Manchester Regiment, he was the brigade Major of 1st Malay Brigade, captured the same day. Their father Wilfred Keith Evans was a Captain in the 2nd Battalion at Mons in 1914 later Brigadier W.K Evans. Before he died he was proud to see that his two sons had joined his old Regiment.

Comments made by 3527870 Pte. Robert James Read (Bob):
After the surrender I was in Tanjong Rhu POW Camp with 3 officers and 33 men from our Battalion, on 30th October 1942 we were taken to the Singapore docks and put on the Dainichi Maru. We arrived at Takao (Kaohsiung) Taiwan after having had a 3 day stop at Saigon on 14th November we were then taken by train to POW Camp Heito.
On 12th November 1943 I was sent to POW Camp 1 (Kinkaseki) and put to work in the Kinkaseki mine with 74 others. We worked there until the beginning of march 1945 when the mine closed. We were kept on half rations until mid May, when a group left for the jungle camp at Kukutsu and the rest followed on the 31st May, this place was far worse than the copper mine.
In late august we were taken to a makeshift evacuation camp at Churon near the Matsuyama airfield until we were liberated and taken to the docks at Kiirun. I was evacuated to manila on the USS block island and eventually sailed home on the Queen Mary.
During the time I was a POW in the camp at Kinkaseki we were all given camp numbers. Mine was 1061, we had to sound off our numbers at all times in Japanese, I always remember mine, juu, roku, ichi: juu (10) roku (6) ichi (1).
Bob was a miner in Nottingham before he enlisted, he died in 1996.
