Hi All,

I am looking for any information about Arthur Smith born 24/04/1897 who joined the Manchester Regiment.

He was in the 2/6th and I think was in France.

Anecdotal evidence is that his whole group apart from Arthur and one other person were killed. Arthur subsequently transferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers ( i dont know why). He left the service in 1920.

I am looking for any info regarding Arthur however small

The only Arthur Smith in the medal rolls who served in the 2/6th Bn and the NF is 5709 Arthur Smith. According to the medal roll he was attached to 174 Tunneling Company RE and then transferred to the 1st Bn NF and given the new number 41099.

Pte 5709 Arthur Smith seems to be a good bet.   He served overseas with 2/6th Bttn, before attachment to 174th Tunnelling Coy, Royal Engineers. Then transferred to 1st Northumberland Fusils No. 41099.
The 4 digit No for 2/6th Bttn indicates Arthur departed prior to the re-numbering in 1917, but he didn't receive a 1914-15 Star meaning Arthur arrived at the front after 31/12/1915.  Also 2/6th Bttn arrived in France in 1917, so I wonder if he was posted to was posted to the RE, on arrival in France.  He may have had relevant skills, eg Miner.
Arthur Smith was discharged from the N Fusils on 12/02/1920 with a pension for General Weakness. Born 1898 and resident 6 Sanderson St, Miles Platting.
