wrong regiment
« on: April 14, 2020, 02:56:08 AM »
on 7th august 1915,charles southern and his older brother edward took part in the attack by the 1/5th manchesters on the Turkish trenches at Gallipoli, both brothers were killed in the assault, their bodies were amongst the many unknowns

2013 Charles southern lived with his widowed mother jane at crown terrace, wigan,he was a railway labourer for the wigan coal+iron company,at Victoria pit,his brother Edward also worked there as a miner,he was 30yrs old

2017 Edward southern lived at 11 Wallace lane, wigan with his wife marion and their children,he was 32yrs old

both boys are commemorated on the helles memorial, but Charles was wrongly listed as 5th Bedfordshire regiment and his name was inscribed on the memorial in the lists of those from the bedfords

Mack,

I note that Charles' name is listed in SDGW (Manchester Regiment) under the 1/5th battalion's section.        PhilipG.

I'll pass the case to IFCP for them to seek correction from CWGC.  It takes @ 1 month.

Quite understandably, it would seem that Pte C. Southern's name will still remain on the Bedford's panels of the Helles Memorial  (55 & 218) as I think the Manchesters' panels are 158 & 170.   Just a thought.    PhilipG.

the alteration on the helles memorial will take some time till its altered, they have to wait until the panels need replacing due to corrosion, which is understandable due to the cost, the CWGC have also rectified the grave register
