We had such a great section on our previous site. I was hoping someone would start it going again. I got so much information on my Granddad Sgt James (Buckley) stepdads name. Known as Gallagher it is my families name.  It was incredible what came out. Iain was very keen on this topic and was very learned. Hope it opens up again.

OK Tis.  Here goes.
In addition to the four regular army battalions of the Manchesters, both Militia Battalions were involved - in addition of course to the men of  the Volunteer Battalions who served in the four Manchester Volunteer Service Companies.

Only one Distinguished Conduct Medal was awarded to the Militia and this was to 403 Sergeant F Fagan of the 6th Militia Battalion whilst serving with the 1st Battalion.  I cannot find any reference to Fagan or his service and would be interested if anyone can provide any information.

Thanks for that Robert. I find it difficult with Militia, Volunteer etc. Iain was writing a book on the 6VB thats what  my granddads outfit was.
I hope it gets off the ground again in this section. It made some interesting reading.

Hi all

just a quick note to say I am still around, progress is steady on the book of the 'Oldham Volunteers 1798-1908'. Hoping to get it published towards the end of next year, earlier if possible.
If anybody has any information relating to the Oldham Volunteers then I would be pleased to hear from them, I am sure there must be some photos of them out there especially in the period that they were known as the 6VB Manchester Regiment.

I'm looking forward to it!!

I know Tis will be pleased to see you (as we all are) glad to hear the books still coming along!  As well as Tis' James Buckley/Gallagher can you please keep an eye out on your travels for my GGGrandfather John Buckley ~ admittedly he does seem to have been South Manchester rather than Oldham, but you never know !

1880 Sergeant John Buckley leaves the army after 31 years service
1881 Is running the Founders Arms in Salford
1891 is employed as a Military Instructor living in Urmston
1901 Schools Private Drill Instructor in Rusholme
1905 Sergeant Instructor of Gymnastics in Rusholme

Several sons were military and I have evidence that at least one was in 1st VB but never have been able to make a connection with John Buckley to a VB yet

Thank you for posting my photo of Granddad James Gallagher AKA Buckley. Sgt 2nd from left top row. Nice looking man always with a carnation in button hole. Smoked a pipe. Can recall the smell when I close my eyes and think about him.
Born 1871 in Heywood Lancs. Brought up with mother Mary and stepfather Isaac Buckley. Was in The Boer War and in the Dardenelles. Lived in Oldham, married to a Mary Ann Ashton who died in 1905 approx. Married Florence Jackson in 1909. (My Grandmother.)
Don't know where photo is taken
Have pension papers if anyone is interested in looking.

Hello from a new member. Since we are discussing medals and the 6th battalion may ask if the DSO recommended to be awarded to Captain F R De Bertadano at the end of the war WAS awarded. I have been to Kew and the records imply he was not awarded it.

At the time he was seconded to the Field Inteligence Department.
