4th Militia Battalion

It appears, following helpful information provided on previous posts, that William Wilton Dart left the 2nd Battalion in 1900 when that battalion left for South Africa. He next appears in Cork as part of the 4th Militia Battalion. I understand that this unit only had a brief history. Can you help me with any information as to when it was formed and for what purpose.
Many thanks
Sandi

Sandi,
Click on the links to the 3rd & 4th Battalions in this link, the 3rd Bn history is also relevant to the 4th.

Thanks Charlie, very informative, have now filled in some of the gaps before WW Dart sailed for Canada.
Appreciate all the help you've given me.
