Tim Bell

Pte Hughes enlisted & embodied in 9th Bttn on 4/1/1915, aged 29. He served at Home.
Harry was discharged unfit from 3/9th Bn at Southport on 8/10/1915.
Harry died on 7/4/1917, from Pulmonary TB due to disease commencing on active service, aged 31.  Reg Ashton Q2 1917 8d/610.
Widow Esther Ann & 4 children (B 1909-15), 98 Moss St, Ashton.

Harry Hughes died from pulmanary TB - commencing in service - at 98 Moss Street, Ashton U Lyne. Tram Driver Late Pte 3/9th M/C Regt (TF).  Esther was the informant.

Harry had previously served with the 5th Manchesters, stated as including the Boer War where he allegedly received the KSA with Clasps for 1901-02, Orange Free State and Cape Colony (aged just 16 in 1901).  He then served from 1903 in the KSLI '7379'  He had been transferred to Reserve in 1906 and mobilised for the Great War on 05/08/1914 but discharged unfit on 14/12/1914.  Pte Hughes had been a labourer when he re-enlisted and embodied in 9th Bttn on 4/1/1915, aged 29. Harry was appointed L/Cpl in June 1915, reverting to Pte on 01/08/1915.  Harry was discharged unfit from 3/9th Bn at Southport on 8/10/1915.
Harry died on 7/4/1917, from Pulmonary TB due to disease commencing on active service, aged 31. 
He was the husband of Esther Ann Hughes & father of 4 children (B 1909-15), 98 Moss St, Ashton U Lyne.  Harry is buried in Dukinfield cemetery.A2.ASH.421 with his wife Esther.

With commencing in service cases we need more evidence to prove that TB started during embodied Great War service. Hold*

This case has now gone forward for commemoration.  The pre-war service was 8 years prior to the Great War.  Hence TB due to active service is believed to refer to the qualifying period.
