Pte 2944 Martin Lavelle
« on: March 04, 2020, 07:21:39 PM »
Pte 2944 Martin Lavelle
Pte Lavelle had been a Cotton Spinner when he enlisted & embodied in 10th Reserve Bttn on 28/9/1914.
Discharged unfit from D Coy of 2/10th Bttn at Southport on 21/6/1915, Martin had Pulmonary TB originating during service at Blackpool in January 1915, but not stated as attributable or aggravated.
Martin died from Pulmonary TB contracted on active service on 16/9/1915, aged 33. Oldham Q3 1915 8d/656
Widow Ethel and 2 children received a pension at 2 Duke St, Oldham.
There are numerous cases like this, where men with TB were accepted as aggravated by service (sometimes years later) and this is why Ethel had the pension.  I’m starting to feel that NAM and CWGC should think about the equality in death premise on this type of case.  The incomplete pension file is the only reason Martin would not be accepted (Frustrated From Finchley) HOLD https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/1114/images/miuk1914a_085257-00279?backUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ancestry.co.uk%2Fcgi-bin%2Fsse.dll%3Findiv%3D1%26dbid%3D1114%26h%3D363485%26tid%3D%26pid%3D%26queryId%3Da4e729a785ee3db99adbf97d89c7a86a%26usePUB%3Dtrue%26_phsrc%3DXVZ24409%26_phstart%3DsuccessSource&ssrc=&pId=363485

This is a an interesting case where records show Maritn Lavelle died from TB contracted in service and the disease originated at Southport in Jan 1915.
There is a contradiction that the TB was specifically not the result of service and I'll check with IFCP before ordering the DC.  I certainly hope the case can go through.

DC confirms TB as cause of death. Martin Lavelle died at his home.  As the TB is confirmed by 2 sources commencing in mobilised service, application will be made for commemoration.
