Pte 5000 / 400846 Thomas Matthewman
Pte Matthewman re-enlisted in 3rd KOYLI, 1194 on 15/5/1913. He had been a Reservist having served 4y with KOYLI from 1907 and previous service, including Boer War from 1895. Thomas was mobilised on 5/8/1914 and joined the BEF att to 2nd KOYLI on 8/11/1914. He received GSW to L Shoulder in France on 28/11/1914 and returned Home on 4/12/1914 and went to Egypt on 17/2/1916. Thomas was transferred to 1/10th Manchesters on 16/3/1916 and returned home on 11/9/1916. Posted to 3/10th Bttn, 45th Prov Bttn and finally 28th Bttn.
Thomas was discharged unfit from 28th Bttn on 22/2/1917, aged 40y 4m. He had TB as “Result of active service due to exposure.”
He died at Home from Phthisis on 30/5/1919, aged 41. Reg Rotherham Q2 1919 9e/698.
Thomas had married widow Annie Smith on 11/4/1919. She lived at 4 Tusmore St, Rotherham. Step daughter Elsie May Smith B 1904. Pension awarded.
