Sgt Willaim Joseph Cunningham.
« on: November 14, 2007, 11:44:41 AM »
Hi I am trying to find out more about my grandfathers time in the Manchester Regiment.  He also served with the No;2 Commando Unit during WWII.  He trained at Achnacarry in Scotland.  I have been in touch with the Army and the Commando Veterans Association, who told me that it is possible that my grandfathers original Regiment will hold his service record.
Does anyone have any advice or information that could help me?

Hi Figerocat and a Warm Welcome  ;D

Chris is right his Service Record will be with the MOD in Glasgow, not with any of his regiments !

Thank you so much for that information. However I have already been in touch with Glasgow they passed me on to the Navy, who never replied.  The Commando Veterans Association told me to try his original regiment.  This being The Manchester Regiment.

I dont know what to do next.  Maybe they can not find anything. I dont know his Army number. Does that matter?  Would he have kept the same number throughout his service?

i think you should have another go at the MOD, if i have it correctly, he was manchester regiment attached to number 2 commando, he would have had the same service number thoughout

i would be tempted to make another application for his service records and not mention the commando unit (just my thoughts of course if anyone has a better idea...)
