Cpl 9655 John Pickering

Tim Bell

Cpl Pickering had been a cotton mill Piecer when he enlisted at Ashton on 27/01/1904, aged 18y 1m.  He had already been serving in 5th Bttn. John served with 2nd Bttn and posted to Reserve on 26/1/1907.  John was Mobilised to Depot on 5/8/1914, joined the BEF on 27/8/1914 and wounded in France on 26/10/1914, returning Home on 27/10/1914.  He joined 3rd Bttn on 10/4/1915.  He was then posted to the BEF with 2nd Bttn on 20/7/1915, transferring to 1st Bttn on 7/11/1915 and joining the MEF at Basra on 10/12/1915 and received GSW to neck on 20/2/1916. Having completed 13 years, John was retained in the service under the MS Act (£20 Bounty) on 26/1/1917. He was promoted Cpl on 20/4/1918 and posted to Alexandria with 1st Bttn on 13/4/1918, when he was admitted to Hosp with Myalgia and NYD. Home on 8/3/1919. John was posted to Reserve on 4/4/1919.
John was discharged unfit from Reserve on 31/3/1920, with service for 16y 54 days.  Pension award, cause n/k.
John died from Endocarditis on 31/1/1921. No evidence this was attrib or agg.
John had Married Ada Whitehead on 9/1/1915.  Their son John had been born on 21/11/1915. Pension Awarded 2 Children. 34 Harry St, Oldham. Father Arthur Edward, 11 Booth St, Oldham.
