L/Cpl 1860 Charles Ferns – 1st Bn
Charles Ferns was a casual labourer / errand boy when he enlisted in the 4th (Special Reserve) Battalion on 23/10/1912. Having completed 6 months initial service with 4th Bn, Charles then attended the annual training in 1913 and 1914.
Charles was mobilised for overseas duty on 08/08/1914 and appointed L/Cpl on 20/11/1914. He embarked for France with the BEF and joined 2nd Battalion for duty on 05/12/1914. Charles was wounded at Le Cateau on 22/12/1914 and treated at 13th Gen Hosp. Boulogne, before apparently returning home where he was poste to 3rd Bn on 02.03.1915..
Charles rejoined the BEF with 1st Bn on 06/07/1915. He then went on to join 1st Bn in Mesopotamia (Iraq) from 11/12/1915 to 09/04/1918. Charles was promoted to Cpl on 15/03/1916 and then served in Egypt from 23/04/1918 until returning home on 19/02/1919.
Charles was demobilised and transferred to Reserve on 18/03/1919. He received a pension from 14/10/1919 for pulmonary TB attributable service and 100% disablement. This pension was renewed for 12 months from 01/09/1920.
Charles Ferns died from disease on 22/12/1920, aged 26. He died in Bucklow, the location of Baguley Sanatorium.
