Pte 7898 John Gardner

Tim Bell

Pte Gardner (B 1883) had been a Potter when he enlisted at Ashton on 11/8/1902. He joined 4th Bttn and was posted to 3rd Bttn on 7/2/1903. John served in S Africa, Singapore, and India.  He was transferred to Reserve on 18/3/1910 and mobilised to 3rd Bttn on 5/8/1914.  John was posted to the BEF with 1st Bttn on 25/3/1915 and returned Home on 7/8/1915.
John was discharged fit on 24/9/1915, at the end of his (13 years) Engagement. His engagement had ended on 10/8/1914.
John died from Chronic Interstitial Nephritis.3-2-1918.  Nephrites / Trench Brights Disease was a common condtion arising in the trenches, yet we have no indication John was suffering the condition at the time of discharge.
Widow, Mrs M Gardner refused pension as they had married after discharge. Father John.
