Pte Seary (born 4/2/1893) enlisted in the Army Service Corps on 22/9/1910.  He served overseas with the ASC and was transferred to the Labour Corps 588009. James was discharged from the LC on 2/4/1919.He had a SWB and Pension for an injury to his knee. He married Mary Eliz. Mayors in Q4 1919.
James must have re-enlisted in the Manchesters.
James died in an accident on 27/7/1921, aged 27. Wigan Q3 8c/30
Mary received a Pension. 37 Lime St, Wigan.  James has an entry in the UK Discharge records.  ADT000567639.  I don't know if this confirms discharge, or all terminations, including death in Service. DC would show if he was serving and explain why Mary received a Pension.

FATALITY TO A WIGAN TERRITORIAL

On Wednesday a distressing accident with fatal results took place in Wallgate. James Seary, a young married man, of 64, Lime-street, Wigan, was a private in the 5th Manchesters, and was preparing for the camp at Carnarvon. He was told off for duty along with James Prescott, to take two field cooking kitchens to the London and North-Western Railway. Seary was in charge of the horses, and on the front seat. When opposite Library-street the horses bolted. Deceased stuck to the reins as well as he could. Prescott succeeded in jumping off. When opposite the Lancashire and Yorkshire Station deceased was thrown to the ground, and a wheel of one of the kitchens passed over him. Also, he sustained a scalp wound. The horses broke their traces, and bolted down Wallgate. Deceased was found lying unconcious when police help arrived. He was taken to the Infirmary in the ambulance, and death ensured an hour later.

Hi Paul,
You've solved the mystery of re-enlisting in 5th Bn.  Are you sure a death in service of Territorial soldier qualifies for commemoration as embodied service? Wouldn't he have been on Reserve - even though he was actualy serving?  Hoping my hypothesis is wrong though.

The CWGC definition of Active Service looks encouraging
"A person is considered to have been in active service when, during
the First or Second World War they were:
 in full-time service in the armed forces; or
 if in part-time service in the armed forces, they were on active
duty"
