we discovered a machine gun amongst the trees,about 150yds from our trenches,capt oldfield and cpl hall,went out with a 100 men,to try and get it,in the meantime major stevenson and Lt johnson went to look for new positions,the men had hardly got 50yds,when they came under fire from four other machine guns that were also hidden in the trees,compelling them to retire,Lt johnson was hit in the stomach and killed

This officer received a commission in the 8th Manchesters in 1898 and was sent to South Africa where he was attached to a militia battalion of the Regiment.   In due course he settled in that country.       By chance, he happened to be in the UK in July 1914 and took the opportunity of returning to the 8th Manchesters, proceeding thereafter to Egypt and eventually to Gallipoli.   As mentioned above he was killed in action on the 16th May 1915 (at the age of 40).   He has no known grave and thus his name is recorded on the Helles Memorial.
