Does anyone know about capt. southern. Sam here again trying to get in touch with people who were in dunkirk as I was . Would like to know about the men in d company who did'nt make it off the beaches as I did and came home on HMS Anthony. can anyone help.  I come from Padiham and now live in Manchester returning to dunkirk on May 14th as I do every year.

Hello Sam.

Were you 1/East Lancs? If so, I was recently talking to a couple of your ex-comrades (one of whom found it amusing recalling a french F1 grenade rolling about the deck!) - they were B coy though.

"Your" campaign is the one that holds my interest above any other (it was my grandad's only part in the war (he was knocked out of it at Arras) and I'm writing a book about a small part of it that , in my opinion, needs to be written ). Being a "local boy" myself (Burnley born and bred) I've also accumulated quite a bit on the East lancs' part in this campaign (for my own interest mainly) involving the 1st and 4th Bns of the East Lancs (plus, of course, 52 LAA Regiment, RA) so, if I can help any, I will.

If you PM me your email address, I'll send you the battalion war diary for the period so you can see if the "official" reports tally with what you know happened!

best wishes,

dave.

Hi Sam.

I've got your email address now (might be best to remove it from your post now to stop unwanted messages from people trying to sell you things!).

I'm down at Kew tomorrow so will be in contact via email on Thursday if that's OK.

PS. Just noticed that I've got a copy of a booklet written by Lt.Col.Pendlebury entitled "1st Battalion the East Lancashire Regiment, France 1940" in Jpeg file format so I can email this too if you haven't already got it (it was published on a limited run with all profits going to the East Lancs regiment Old Comrades Association Burnley Branch). It's quite a good compliment to the War Diaries and the Regimental History.

best wishes,

dave.

It's exactly (almost word for word) the same as what's in the regimental history!  (Not a surprise really - Pendlebury wrote that too!!! :D)
