NOTES
3528082 Pte. Wilfred Harper.
The WW2 Roll of Honour says he died on 13th November 1944.
His POW records say he died 13th November 1944 on Labuan Island, Borneo.
The inscription on the family gravestone says 13th November 1942 at Borneo.
The CWGC say he died on the 6th December 1943. However the grave registration report had 6th December 1943 but this was crossed out and changed to 13th November 1944 in red ink. His original burial in Tanbaya Cemetery No2 gives his grave number which is amongst men who died in December 1943.

The confusion probably started with the WW2 Roll of Honour that was submitted to the CWGC which they then used to change the date in the original grave registration report from 6th December 1943. This POW could not have died in Borneo and then be buried in Kanchanaburi Thailand.

The following information was received from Andrew Snow in TBRC regarding 3528082 Pte Wilfred Harper:

"Our POW Records show his death (correctly) at F and H Hospital Camp (across the road from the cemetery) and burial in F and H.
Burial Ground #2 (next to the cemetery) from Beri-Beri.
His POW Record card back has top right the correct date of death  (Japanese Calendar date 18 - 12 - 6) which is 6th December 1943.

H'Force POW's who survived.

This lists is of H'Force survivors liberated in September 1945 and the camps they were liberated from where known.

By May 1943, most of the POWs left on Singapore were ill and unsuitable for hard, manual labour. However, work on the Thai/Burma railway had fallen behind so the Japanese forced even very sick men to Thailand to work on the line.

Between 5th and 17th May, 3,270 POWs left Singapore for Thailand. Known as 'H'Force, they worked in the Hellfire Pass/Three Tier bridge area. The work took a heavy toll on the men and, of those who left Singapore, 885 died. The survivors were returned to Singapore in December 1943.

Arthur played the bugle at many of the POW's funerals.
His Record Card has his address as 30 Rowlan Street, Heaton Norris, Stockport. His sister Alice is at the Greg address (Spelt Gregg on the Record Card).
His Liberation Q has the Greg Street address.
In September 1945 Arthur Lane was waiting to board a Dakota that would take him to Rangoon on the first leg of his journey home, the bugle that he had played the last post over the graves of more than 3000 POW's was no longer with him, the Japanese had confiscated it just before liberation in case he used it to signal their enemy. The Japanese had kept the bugle and handed it to someone to return it to Arthur. Shortly before he was due to fly out 7006491 Bandmaster. Thomas Joseph Gray handed Arthurs bugle back to him and Arthur and his trusty bugle went home to England together. The bugle now sits in the Regimental Museum in Ashton under Lyne.
In late October 1945 Arthur was given 6 weeks leave, after his leave was up he was ordered to report back to camp on 22nd December. He duly complied. On the morning of the 24th December Arthur deserted along with 3529745 Pte. Norman Bury LQ and both men went back home to spend Christmas with their families, the first Christmas that both of them had spent with their families for over nine years. After Christmas both men reported back, Arthur was given extra duties for a week and Norman was confined to barracks for two weeks. Shortly afterwards Arthur was transferred to the Royal Signals as an unreliable soldier because he had deserted, his only offence in all the years of his service.

Re: Manchester's of Singapore and their Fate.
« Reply #12 on: November 19, 2020, 04:12:46 PM »
F'Force POW's who survived.

In April 1943 13 train loads of men of "F" Force were transported from Singapore to work on the "Railway". On 26th April 1943 the men on train No 9 were virtually all men of the Manchester Regiment. On 30th April the remaining men from the Regiment followed on train No 13, the following lists are those who were sent back to Singapore and who were liberated from the various POW Camps around the island. All these men were on train No 9 unless stated. The name of the Singapore POW Camp is included where known.

"F" Force was not classified as a normal working group of slave labourers. The prisoners of war allocated to this force were all sick men, with Diphtheria and Dysentery amongst other illnesses. The men were regarded as not fit enough to be transferred to working areas but were shipped out of Changi anyway on the 13 trains with no ventilation and little food or water. The 7,000 men within this unit composed of 3,444 British and nearly 3,600 Australians, the Journey took 5 days and ended at Ban Pong, although then a 200-mile march ensued towards Burma.
