before the war,william worked for the wigan coal+iron company as a haulage hand at giants hall colliery,he was sent to france with the 1/5th manchesters and saw much action,winning the MM along the way,in October 1917 he was wounded and shipped home to recover,after recovering,he was posted to filey camp to bring him back up to full strength,on 2nd November 1918 he died in filey hospital after accidentally being shot by a sergeant who was cleaning his rifle.
