1st Regiment 1944-45 route question
« on: July 04, 2019, 11:42:28 AM »
Hi there,

I am hoping to take my father on a trip to follow in my grandfathers WW2 footsteps. He was in the 1st Manchester Regiment and landed on Sword Beach in 1944 shortly after D Day, and was discharged after the war ended,  in Hamburg on 6th December 1945, we think he was around Caern and then Antwerp and Aarchen.  We believe it was a mortar platoon.

Lt Leslie Barron, 304982, b 8.6.17 - d Oct 1993.

If anyone can help with more details of his units movements, I would really appreciate it.

Many thanks,

Andrew

Hi Andrew

It sounds great what you are going to do with your dad. I would be happy to help you:

The War Diary for the 1st Bn The Manchester Regt

WO172/93 =1940-Oct -Dec 1940 & Jan-Dec 1941
WO166/8800 = 1942
WO166/12612 = 1943
WO171/1336= 1944
WO171/1337 = Sept-Oct 1944
WO171/1338 = Nov-Dec 1944

If you send me your email address I would be happy to send the War Diary over for a donation to a local Veterans drop in Support Group Veterans & Families - Listening Project (Surrey).

Cheers Roy

Many thanks, he was in 12 company mortars, are they in the diaries? I will of course be delighted to donate to your charity. My email is barrontv(at)yahoo.com. Very much appreciated.

Change the (at) for @. We don't have email addresses on the open forum as this can lead
to spam.
Thank you

Hi there, Yes I did, thanks very much. Let me know about the charity you mentioned. Do you know how the entire battalion was structured and which units did WD?  Thanks again, really appreciated, Andrew
