capt Bolton was one of the walking wounded being transported from le havre to Southampton on the hospital ship warilda on 3rd august 1918 when she was torpedoed by the german submarine UC-49,103 walking wounded were trapped below in I.ward,all of them perished,captain boltons body was later recovered and his remains were cremated at Manchester crematorium.he was 30yrs old

he enlisted as private 6959 r.l bolton 16th manchesters in september 1914,served with them in france as a corporal until he was commissioned and posted to the 2/7th battalion.

he was a cotton shipping merchant in partnership with his father john in the firm of john bolton+company.

I note that UC49 was sunk on the 8th August 1918 by the destroyer HMS Opossum in the English Channel off the coast of Devon with the loss of all hands.      PhilipG.
